Recommendations for the management of elevated blood pressure and hypertension

Arterial hypertension: the new 2024 European recommendations in practice

The recommendations evaluate and synthesize available data with the aim of assisting healthcare professionals in proposing the best diagnostic or therapeutic approach for a given patient suffering from a specific pathology. These recommendations are intended for healthcare professionals, and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) makes them freely available.

The ESC recommendations do not substitute for the individual responsibility of healthcare professionals to make appropriate and informed decisions, taking into account the health status of each patient, and in consultation with the patient or their caregiver, where applicable. It is also the responsibility of the healthcare professional to verify the rules and regulations applicable in each country regarding medications and medical devices at the time of prescription, and to respect the ethical rules of their profession.

The ESC recommendations represent the official position of the ESC on a given subject and are regularly updated when new evidence justifies it. The ESC policies and procedures regarding the development and publication of its recommendations are available on the ESC website.

This version of the recommendations updates and replaces the previous 2018 version.
